GGS at Oxford University

GGS made four presentations as part of a Study Programme held at Oxford University from 27 November to 2 December 2009, attended by a visiting delegation of Chinese businessmen and women. The Seminar was organised by Eurasia-ips and was held at the Saïd Business School Egrove Park conference facility.



Professor Pierce speaks at ANAN Conference in Nigeria

Nigeria's professional accounting body, the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), held its 2009 Annual Conference "Global Economic Meltdown: The Road Map to Recovery" in Abuja on 24 - 27 November 2009. Professor Pierce presented a paper at this conference on A Development Framework for Sustainable Recovery.



Presentations by GGS at ICAEW

On 6 November 2009, Professor Pierce was a speaker at the Conference for Non-Executive Directors held by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales at their offices in London. In the following week he facilitated a development session for the Financial Talent Executive Network organised by the ICAEW.



GGS trains Corporate Governance Trainers in South Africa

Professor Pierce, together with co-presenter Brenda Bowman, presented a 4-day train the trainers programme in Johannesburg in October 2009. The programme was jointly organised by the Global Corporate Governance Forum in Washington and the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa, and was attended by participants from Latvia, South Africa, Mauritius, Ghana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.



Contribution to book: Global Boards

The book ‘Global Boards: One Desire, Many Realities’, edited by Professors Andrew and Nada Kakabadse and published in October 2009, contains a chapter by Chris Pierce. The chapter is entitled ‘International Board Evaluation: Trends and Practices’.



Contribution to book: Corporate Social Responsibility

Samy Nathan and Chris Pierce contributed a chapter to the book ‘Corporate Social Responsibility: A Case Study Approach‘, which was edited by Professor Christine Mallin and published in September 2009. The chapter was entitled ‘Corporate Social Responsibility in Islamic Financial Institutions in the Middle East’.



GGS trains Corporate Governance Trainers in Malawi

In August 2009, Chris Pierce co presented a 4-day train the trainers programme for the Institute of Directors in Blantyre, Malawi, together with Alison Dillon Kibirige and Brenda Bowman. The programme was jointly organised by the Global Corporate Governance Forum in Washington and the Institute of Directors in Malawi.



Chris Pierce appointed as Honorary Professor in June 2009

Chris Pierce received an honorary professorship from Cass Business School, City University London, in June 2009. Cass Business School is renowned as one of Europe’s leading establishments in business and management education, consultancy and research.



GGS trains European Corporate Governance Trainers in France

In May 2009, Chris Pierce co-presented a 3-day train the trainers programme for the Association of European Development Finance Institutions (EDFI, a group of 16 bilateral institutions that provide long-term finance for private-sector enterprises in developing and reforming economies). The programme was organized by the Global Corporate Governance Forum, and funded by the EDFI secretariat and the French (Proparco) and Austrian (Oesterreichische Entwicklungsbank AG) development finance institutions. It was held in Marseille, and attended by participants from France, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Slovenia.



Corporate Governance training for large Middle East company

In May 2009 Chris Pierce presented a two-day corporate governance workshop in Jericho, Palestine for directors of a large investment holding company.



GGS in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Chris Pierce jointly led two train the trainers programmes in Sao Paulo on 15 - 17 February and 18 - 20 February 2009 with Dr Mary Jo Larson of FlexAbility International from the USA. The course was organised by the Global Corporate Governance Forum and the Brazilian Institute of Corporate Governance (IBGC). 41 participants attended the programmes - 36 from Brazil, 2 from Mozambique, 2 from Mexico and one from Panama.



Judging of corporate governance banking awards in the Middle East, December 2008

Chris Pierce was a member of the jury panels of the following awards, which aim to identify and honour banks that show leadership and initiative in enhancing good corporate governance:
• The Hawkamah-UAB 2008 Bank Corporate Governance Award
This award attracted over 35 applications from banks in 13 countries including UAE, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, KSA, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Morocco, Palestine, Qatar, Sudan and Tunisia. The winner was the National Bank of Oman.
• The 2008 UAE Banks Corporate Governance Awards
‘Overall Corporate Governance Structure’ was won by the National Bank of Abu Dhabi; ‘Best Board Award’ was won by the Bank of Sharjah; and ‘Best Transparency and Disclosure Award’ was won by the Commercial Bank of Dubai.



GGS trains corporate governance trainers in Zambia

As part of the roll out of the Corporate Governance Leadership Training Resources in Africa, the GCGF organised two Train-the-Trainer Programs on 3rd - 6th and 10th - 13th November 2008. Chris Pierce, as a member of the Forum's training faculty, provided advice over the two weeks to over 30 corporate governance trainers in Zambia.



GGS trains corporate governance trainers in Tunisia

As a first step in rolling out the Corporate Governance Board Leadership Training Resources in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the Global Corporate Governance Forum and IFC’s Private Enterprise Partnership for the MENA region (PEP-MENA) organized a Train-the-Trainer Program 28 – 31 July in Abu Dhabi. Chris Pierce as a member of the Forum’s Training Faculty provided advice over the four days to corporate governance trainers in the MENA region. The professional workshop was hosted by the Abu Dhabi Center for Corporate Governance and IOD Mudara with the support of the Egyptian Institute of Directors (EIOD) and the Hawkamah Institute for Corporate Governance.



GGS participation in Oxford University seminar

A seminar on corporate governance was held at Mansfield College on 14 July 2008 for visiting Chinese delegates, organised by Eurasia-ips in conjunction with Mansfield College. Chris Pierce made two presentations on International Corporate Governance Trends and The Role of the Board.



GGS participation in course at Hazlewood Castle, Yorkshire

Chris Pierce led a corporate governance seminar as part of the 'Bridging the Gap' programme run by the IDM Group on 9 July 2008 at Hazlewood Castle in Yorkshire.



GGS corporate governance training activities in Tunisia

Chris Pierce ran two corporate governance workshops together with Tony Dixon from the IoD South Africa in Sousse 28 June - 2 July 2008. The workshops were part of a programme organised by CIPE (Center for International Private Enterprise), and introduced Tunisian directors and academics to international corporate governance best practices and the newly published Tunisian guide on corporate governance.

Hawkamah's launch of the Role of Company Secretary Workshop, Dubai

On 26 May 2008, the Hawkamah Institute for Corporate Governance launched its first workshop to highlight the growing role of Company Secretaries in promoting good corporate governance practices within the MENA region's organisations.

The one-day workshop, led by Chris Pierce, provided existing Company Secretaries with an insight into the key role of a Company Secretary in advancing corporate governance within the boardroom. The workshop was attended by over 20 participants, including Company Secretaries, Finance & Legal Directors, Head of Compliance, Legal Counsels and Advisors from some of the region's leading organisations.
